A man is in custody for attempting to kill a police officer with the officer’s own gun during a struggle last night in the village of Clinton. The Rock County Sheriff’s office reports that 58 year old Terry P. Robinson wrestled a gun away from a village of Clinton police officer called to 703 Carol St., Apt K, Clinton at 6 p.m. Yhe officer had gone to the apartment to respond to an abandoned 911 call. At the apartment, Robinson began a violent struggle with the officer and grabbed the officer’s gun.
Investigators say a large wildfire caused by logging operations in northwestern Wisconsin wasn't intentionally set and criminal charges aren't expected. The Department of Natural Resources said yesterday that negligence wasn't involved in the blaze, which destroyed 17 homes and forced dozens of people to evacuate before it was contained Wednesday night.
Wisconsin's unemployment rate for April was 7.1 percent, unchanged from the previous month. The state Department of Workforce Development reported the latest figure today. It also released preliminary numbers showing the state added 32,000 private sector jobs last year.

After leading 5-3 going into the ninth inning, the Whitewater Warhawks gave up two runs in the ninth and two more in the tenth and Stevens Point ralied for a 7-6 win in the NCAA Midwest Regional. The loss sends the Warhawks in to the elimination round to face St. Scholastica today at noon at Prucha Field. Yesterday the Saints fell to Case Western Reserve 3-1. Travis Snider homered and drove in three runs last night to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1. Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte, Garrett Jones and Russell Martin added two hits apiece for the Pirates. Jonathan Lucroy plated the Brewers' lone run with a single in the first inning. Hiram Burgos gave up three runs in six innings as the Brewers have lost 11 of 13. The road trip continues tonight in St. Louis as Wily Peraltra goes against Jamie Garcia. Authorities in Illinois have arrested the alleged driver in a Sunday morning hit-and-run crash in Janesville that left three teens injured. 22 year old Emeterio Acostawas arrested Monday morning by Rockford, Ill., police. Acosta is accused of fleeing the scene of an accident around 3 a.m. Sunday at County O and the Interstate 90 overpass, according to court documents filed earlier this week.
The Whitewater Police Department announced that Detective Daniel Meyer was its 2013 Officer of Year during its annual Police Day ceremony Wednesday. Police Chief Otterbacher explained that the Officer of the Year Award is based on “job performance, motivation, dedication to duty, assistance to other officers, and overall job knowledge.” Meyer tells WFAW News
Gov. Scott Walker has submitted a revised budget for the University of Wisconsin System that officially calls for freezing tuition over the next two years and additional spending cuts in light of news the university has a $650 million surplus.
The Department of Natural Resources now says that wildfire which burned more than nine thousand acres in Douglas and Bayfield counties is northern Wisconsin's biggest forest fire in nearly 33 years. That fire started Tuesday afternoon. The DNR is investigating to find whether logging activities might have started the fire, which was helped along by dry and windy conditions. The state suspended burning permits statewide.
Wandy Rodriguez allowed one run over seven strong innings and Neil Walker hit a two-run single as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1. Yovanni Gallardo walked four and struck out four in six innings, allowing just three hits. Rickie Weeks hit his third homer to provide Milwaukee's only run. Francisco Rodriguez is returning to the Brewers. He’ll be called up today from Triple-"A" Nashville, where he completed a one-month tryout period. "K"-Rod struck out the side in his final audition on Tuesday night. Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke said he’s not sure if Rodriguez is up to his performance level from last year, but he’s still throwing his fastball at 90-to-91 miles an hour – and his change-up has also been good. To make room on the 25-man roster, the Brewers are sending catcher-and-first baseman Blake Lalli down to Triple-"A" Nashville.

Acting upon the recommendation of the County Administrator Search Committee, the full Jefferson County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to hire Benjamin Wehmeier as the new permanent Jefferson County Administrator Tuesday. He will begin his new duties officially on July 1, when he will be taking over for Interim County Administrator Kathi Cauley, who was appointed by the board to lead the county following the March 31 retirement of County Administrator Gary Petre. Wehemeier’s annual starting salary will be $113,000. Wehmeier tells WFAW News
Additionally on Tuesday, after a 75-minute argument the board moved forward, snail-like, on the new proposed County Highway Department facility by approving a contract with Milwaukee-based Barrientos Design for $199,319 to design, plan, and oversee construction of the new main facility which will be located on the ‘Old Countryside Home’ location. Specific construction contracts will be before the board in the future. The board approved the design services contract on a 19-11 vote.
The new Marquette poll shows that three-of-every-four Wisconsinites want tuition to be frozen this fall at University of Wisconsin campuses. 76-percent of almost 720 respondents favored a tuition freeze, after reports that the university could have one-point-two billion dollars in reserves by the end of June. Governor Scott Walker and a number of state lawmakers have urged the Board of Regents to freeze tuition, after learning how big the reserves were at the U-W’s 26 campuses.A Wisconsin man who was convicted in the 2010 slayings of a Rockford couple has been sentenced to life in prison. Chief Judge Joseph McGraw sentenced 29-year-old Alexander Castillo of Janesville on Tuesday. The judge also sentenced Castillo to another 51 years in prison for home invasion and using a gun.
Andrew McCutchen hit a walkoff homer in the bottom of the 12th to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. The Brewers were up 3-2 in the eighth, when John Axford blew his third save opportunity of the year. Ryan Braun finished with three hits for the Brewers, who had won five straight at PNC Park. The NCAA Division Three baseball Regional begins today at Prucha Field in Whitewater as top seeded St. Thomas takes on St. Scholastica at noon. Second seed Steveens Point will play Benedictine at three and the Warhawks will take on Case Western Reserve at 6:00 tonight.
UW-Whitewater sophomore first baseman Marty Herum is the 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Position Player of the Year and Warhawk head coach John Vodenlich is the Coach of the Year. Herum, a sophomore first baseman, led the WIAC with a .430 batting average. He was also the league leader in doubles, second in total bases, and fifth in runs scored. Vodenlich led UW-W to a 21-2 record in the WIAC, winning the league crown by three games. He has directed UW-W to seven championships in his ten years as the Warhawk head coach, and 2013 marks the fifth time he has been named WIAC Baseball Coach of the Year.

The Milton School Board of Education voted to approve Monday night a contract for Milton Middle School Principal Timothy Schigur to become the district’s next administrator. Lake Mills Area School District Administrator Dean Sanders was offered the job after going through two rounds of interviews but turned down the job because the Lake Mills School Board changed Sanders contract. Sanders said, “The Lake Mills board changed my contract and I felt I owed them something.” He also said. “They made it more attractive to stay.” He said, “About a week later they called and offer the job and I turned them down.” Schigur was one of six semifinalists for the position before the Milton School Board narrowed the field to two finalists, Platteville High School Principal Jeffrery Jacobson and Sanders. Jacobson also turned down the job. Schigur has been at the Milton Midde School as principal for six years. He will start his new job on July 1.
A Fort Atkinson man has been cited for fifth-offense drunken driving following a crash in Rock County. 50 year old Scott Chadwick was arrested in connection with the one-vehicle crash that was reported Sunday evening in the Town of Fulton. Milton EMS transported Chadwick to Mercy Hospital-Main in Janesville, where he was admitted for observation. He did not sustain any life-threatening injuries.
The state Assembly is set to vote on a Republican bill that would ensure repeat drunken drivers spend time behind bars. The bill would require judges to impose three-year prison sentence on seven-, eight- and nine-time offenders and a minimum four-year prison sentence for 10-time offenders and beyond
Marco Estrada allowed three hits over seven innings last night in the Milwaukee Brewers' 5-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Norichika Aoki had three hits and three RBIs for the Brewers, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Rickie Weeks was benched last night in the midst of a season-long slump. Weeks is hitting just .181 with two homers and nine R-B-I’s. He did pinch-hit in the ninth inning, and he struck out in Milwaukee’s 5-to-1 victory. Manager Ron Roenicke said the benching would only last for one game.
